Control A.8.2: System documentation and information for users
Determine what information users of the AI system need and provide it.
What control A.8.2 asks
Determine what information users of the AI system need and provide it.
Why it matters for privacy
A user who does not know the limits of the system will use it on data it was never meant to see. The information for users is a privacy control.
Where the draft lands: information at the point of use. The abstract applies to users as well as developers. Clear information is how a user avoids creating the risk.
Basis for A.8.2: the ISO page 56582 and the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 control record. No draft requirement is stated here: the abstract gives the direction and the text is not public. Operating, monitoring and telling people.
Evidence for control A.8.2
The list below is what a reviewer will want produced, not described. For control A.8.2 the list is written for an AI system that touches personal data, so a system with no personal data will need a subset.
- User information User information covering purpose, that the user is dealing with AI, how to interact and override, technical requirements and limitations, human oversight needs, accuracy and performance, relevant impact assessment findings, benefit claim revisions, updates, contacts and training material
- User information Documented criteria for deciding what information is given
- User information Validation that users can access complete, current information
Where control A.8.2 commonly fails
- Users not told they are interacting with AI
- No criteria for what information users receive
- Information not kept current after updates
What to do about control A.8.2 before the draft lands
Publish the intended use, the prohibited uses, the data the system should not receive and the route for a privacy concern. Put it where the user is, not only on a website.
Do not rebuild around a draft. Control A.8.2 already requires the evidence above, and the privacy preparation is the same control applied to the personal data an AI system touches.
