What control A.9.2 asks

Set out in writing how the organization makes sure AI systems are used responsibly.

Why it matters for privacy

Most personal data enters an organization through a system someone bought, not one it built. Responsible use has to cover the bought system and the free tool.

The 27091 overlay

Where the draft lands: the user side of the lifecycle. The abstract applies to organizations that use AI systems. Use is where most of them meet the risk.

Basis for A.9.2: the ISO page 56582 and the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 control record. The public record supports the point at the level of the abstract; the draft text is not public. Operating, monitoring and telling people.

Evidence for control A.9.2

These are the records that turn the control from a statement into something checkable. For control A.9.2 the list is written for an AI system that touches personal data, so a system with no personal data will need a subset.

  • Responsible use Documented responsible use process covering approvals, cost including monitoring and maintenance, approved sourcing requirements and applicable legal requirements
  • Responsible use Evidence the process applies to internally built and third-party systems

Where control A.9.2 commonly fails

  • Staff adopt AI tools without any approval
  • Ongoing monitoring cost ignored in adoption decisions

What to do about control A.9.2 before the draft lands

Set a use process: approve the tool, classify the data allowed, prohibit personal data in unapproved tools, and review the use at a fixed interval.

The certificate, if you hold one, is against ISO/IEC 42001:2023. Control A.9.2 is where the privacy work lands, and it is auditable before the draft is published.
